* Sub-Sahara Africa has the greatest proportion of children who are orphans (USAID, UNAIDS and UNICEF)

*By the end of 2001, 34 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa were orphans - 12% of all children in the region.

* In 2001, at least 15% of children in 10 sub-Saharan countries had lost one or both parents to AIDS, civil war and or other causes (UNICEF)

* By 2010 42 million children will be orphans - 15% of all children in 12 sub-Saharan African countries
